Western Railways win Kattakkar Trophy All India Inter Club 'Water Polo' Tournament in Pune

Pune,  December 18, 2023 –   Western Railways scored a 12-9 win over Indian Navy to lift the Kattakkar Trophy All India Inter Club Water Polo Tournament which is being organised by Deccan Gymkhana Under the auspices of the Swimming Federation of India and played  at the Tilak Tank  of Deccan Gymkhana .

In the Final Match between Indian Navy and Western Railway. Indian Navy started as the stronger team leading 2 – 0. But Western Railway came back strong finishing the firtst quarter with only one goal deficit.

In the second quarter Western Railway uped their game taking a lead of six goals to five. Indian Navy lost 2 of their main players in the 3rd quarter to permenant exclusion and Western Railway took an important four goal lead with score 10 goals to 6. Navy tried to make a come back in the forth quarter but western Railway remained strong and won the match 12 goals to 9.

Ashwinikumar Kunde was the top scorer for Western Railway scoring and was awarded player of the match. Western Railway was the only team to not loose a single match in the entire tournament.  

The winnner Wetern Railway got Katakkar Trophy and Rs. 50000/-, while runnner up Indian Navy got Trophy and  Rs. 30000/-. The prizes were given away at the hands of International Water Polo Players Sanjay Karandikar and Shailesh Tamhankar, Mr. Jay Apte Secretary Pune District Aquatic Association (PDAAA), Mr. Ajit Sohoni President PDAAA, Neeta Talavlikar co-ordinator of the tournament, Amit Golwalkar Organizing secretary of the tournament. Mr. Mihir Kelkar Hon. Finance Secretary DG and Mr. Girish Inamdar Hon. General Secretary DG were present for the Award Ceremony.

For the 3rd place CSA scored 3 early goals in the firtst quarter without conceding any goal. The same goal diffrence was maintained through out the match. Eastern Railway tried to make various comebacks in the match but could never cross the 3 goal defecit of the first qurter, with CSA Winning the match 12-09.
