What an Era! Arijit Singh Announces Retirement From Playback Singing, Says “I Am Calling It Off”
The singer will honour existing commitments but will not take up new film assignments, while continuing to make independent music
Arijit Singh, one of the most influential voices of modern Hindi cinema, has announced that he is stepping away from playback singing. The news came as a surprise to fans across the country and marks the end of an era in Bollywood music.
Taking to his Instagram handle, Arijit shared an emotional note for his listeners. He wrote,
“Hello, Happy new year to all. I want to thank you all for giving me so much of love all these years as listeners. I am happy to announce that I am not gonna be taking any new assignments as a playback vocalist from now on. I am calling it off. It was a wonderful journey.”

The announcement instantly sparked strong reactions online. One user commented, “Kehdo account hacked hai,” while another wrote, “Bollywood music is empty without him.” For many fans, it is difficult to imagine Hindi film music without Arijit’s voice, which has shaped the emotional soundscape of an entire generation.
At 38, Arijit Singh has already built a legacy few singers achieve in a lifetime. His breakthrough came with Tum Hi Ho from Aashiqui 2 in 2013, a song that transformed him into the voice of modern romance. From that point on, his career moved at an extraordinary pace.
Some of his most loved songs include Channa Mereya from Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, Phir Bhi Tumko Chaahunga from Half Girlfriend, and Hawayein from Jab Harry Met Sejal. His style, known for emotional depth and restrained expression, made him the most in-demand playback singer of his time.
Arijit has won two National Film Awards and was honoured with the Padma Shri in 2025, recognising his contribution to Indian music.
In another message, he clarified that retirement from playback singing does not mean retirement from music. He wrote,
“God has been really kind to me. I am a fan of good music and in future will be learning more and do more on my own as a small little artist. Just to be clear that I won’t stop making music.”
He also confirmed that he still has pending commitments which he will complete. New releases featuring his voice are expected in 2026, as these projects were signed earlier. However, he made it clear that he will not be accepting any new film projects going forward.
This means Arijit Singh is closing the chapter on playback singing but opening another as an independent musician. His focus will now be on personal artistic growth and self-driven musical creation rather than film-based assignments.
Over the past decade, Arijit became more than just a singer. He became the emotional voice of Bollywood. Love, heartbreak, longing, hope, and healing were all expressed through his songs. His music defined the sound of an entire generation.
His decision reflects a shift from commercial success to personal artistic freedom. While his absence in films will leave a deep void, his presence in independent music may reveal a newer, more intimate side of his artistry.
For fans, it is a bittersweet moment. Playback singing may lose its most iconic voice, but music itself is not losing Arijit Singh. He is simply choosing a different path to express it.
