In April 2024, WhatsApp banned 7.1 million Indian users for violating the platform’s rules and policies, aiming to maintain a safe user environment. The company has emphasized that it will continue to take action against accounts breaching its terms to ensure platform integrity.

According to WhatsApp’s latest India Monthly Report, the bans were implemented to curb misuse and ensure a secure environment for its users. The report revealed that between April 1 and April 30, 2024, WhatsApp banned a total of 7,182,000 accounts. Out of these, 1,302,000 accounts were proactively banned before any user reports were filed. This proactive approach is part of WhatsApp’s broader strategy to prevent abuse by using advanced machine learning and data analytics to identify suspicious behavior indicative of abuse.

In April 2024, WhatsApp received 10,554 user reports covering various issues, including account support, ban appeals, product support, and safety concerns. Despite the high number of reports, only six accounts were actioned based on these reports, highlighting the stringent criteria for account action.

The bans on Indian accounts align with WhatsApp’s efforts to comply with the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021. These guidelines mandate the publication of compliance reports detailing actions taken in response to user grievances and law violations. The latest report from June 2024 underscores WhatsApp’s rigorous measures against harmful behavior, leveraging both user complaints and sophisticated in-house detection mechanisms.
