The story behind Bluetooth actually goes back more than 1,000 years to a Viking king from Denmark.

In 1997, developers working on wireless communication technology were searching for a temporary codename for the project. During discussions, they came across the story of Harald Bluetooth Gormsson, a 10th-century Danish king famous for uniting different Scandinavian tribes.

The developers felt the comparison perfectly matched the purpose of the technology, which was designed to connect different electronic devices wirelessly.

King Harald Bluetooth was known for bringing people together, while Bluetooth technology was created to connect devices together.

Initially, the name “Bluetooth” was meant to be temporary. The team had considered another name called “PAN”, short for “Personal Area Networking.”

However, reports say there were already many trademark and internet reference issues connected to the name PAN. Another alternative, “RadioWire,” also failed to receive approval.

In the end, the temporary codename “Bluetooth” stayed permanently.

The famous Bluetooth logo also has a hidden meaning connected to Viking history.

The Bluetooth symbol is created by combining two ancient Scandinavian runes representing the letters ‘H’ and ‘B’ from Harald Bluetooth’s name.

This unique design later became one of the most recognised technology symbols in the world.

Today, Bluetooth is used globally in smartphones, televisions, cars, gaming devices and wireless accessories. Despite becoming a modern tech necessity, its name continues to carry a piece of medieval Scandinavian history.

Experts say the success of the name lies in how perfectly it reflects the technology’s purpose, connecting devices just as King Harald once united tribes centuries ago.
