Woman Loses Twins After Doctor’s ‘Video Call’ Treatment Lead to Botched Procedure
Telangana: Family demands justice as hospital is sealed and police initiate probe into alleged medical negligence.
A tragic case of alleged medical negligence in Telangana has led to the death of unborn twins after a doctor reportedly guided a critical medical intervention via phone, without being physically present. The mother, 26-year-old Batti Keerthi from Eliminedu village in Rangareddy district, had conceived the twins through IVF after seven years of marriage.
Her troubles began on April 6 when she visited Vijaya Laxmi Hospital for a routine prenatal check-up. Dr. V Anusha Reddy, a senior gynaecologist, diagnosed a loosened cervix and performed a cervical stitch, advising Keerthi to rest. However, on May 4, Keerthi experienced severe abdominal pain and was rushed back to the same hospital. Dr. Reddy, reportedly unavailable at the time, instructed the nurses over a phone call to administer an injection to relieve the pain.
The injection not only failed to alleviate Keerthi’s pain but also caused the cervical stitches to rupture, leading to the expulsion of both foetuses. Though Keerthi survived, the twins could not be saved.
District Medical and Health Officer (DMHO) Venkateshwarlu Rao described the event as a “serious case of medical negligence” and criticized the decision to allow unqualified staff to handle such a sensitive situation. He confirmed that a full inquiry is underway and that the hospital has been sealed by state health officials.
Ibrahimpatnam police have filed a case under Section 106(1) read with Section 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which pertains to medical negligence. According to SHO I Jagadeesh, further action will be taken following the DMHO’s official report.
Heartbroken relatives staged a protest outside the hospital, demanding strict punishment for those responsible.
