Pune, 26 October 2025 – Maharashtra is witnessing an unexpected spell of rain even after the official withdrawal of the southwest monsoon. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert across several districts, warning of light to moderate rain and thunderstorms over the next few days.

According to the IMD, a depression over the Arabian Sea is moving slowly along the west coast, bringing moisture inland and triggering widespread rainfall. At the same time, a strong weather system in the Bay of Bengal is intensifying and is likely to turn into a cyclonic storm named Montha by October 27 morning.

The Arabian Sea depression is expected to bring light to moderate rain or thunderstorms to many parts of Maharashtra, with isolated heavy showers likely in Konkan, Goa, and Madhya Maharashtra. Pune remains under a yellow alert till October 26, with chances of light to moderate rain and thunderstorms, while coastal areas could experience brief heavy spells.

According to IMD Pune, thunderstorms with lightning are expected in several parts of Maharashtra over the next four to five days. The ongoing rain is mainly due to the depression over the Arabian Sea and its gradual movement toward the coast. Moisture from the sea and daytime heating are creating favorable conditions for thunderstorms.

The depression, which was earlier located farther offshore, has now started moving closer to land. Its slow movement and growing intensity are driving the current weather across the state.

As of October 26, the Regional Meteorological Centre in Mumbai has issued alerts for thunderstorms, lightning, light to moderate rain, and gusty winds (30–40 km/h) in several districts, including Pune, its surrounding ghats, Ahilyanagar, Raigad, Mumbai, Nandurbar, Dhule, Palghar, and Thane.
