The Maharashtra Wheelchair Cricket Association approached the Rotary Club of Pune Central with a request for donation of Sports Wheelchairs for their players. The Team was using normal wheelchairs which were unsuitable for playing competitive cricket, and had to depend on wheelchairs borrowed from other teams during competitions.

The request was discussed amongst the members of the Rotary Club of Pune Central and 12 members agreed to donate one wheelchair each. These Twelve sports wheelchairs have been procured from a company in Delhi and were handed over to the Maharashtra Wheelchair Cricket Team on Saturday, 25 November 2023.

Commodore Ajay Chitnis, President Rotary Club of Pune Central said that this was a unique project being undertaken by the club, and though the club has donated a number of wheelchairs earlier to hospitals for use by patients, this would be the first time that they were being donated to sportspersons who are keen to pursue their passion for cricket despite the challenges imposed on them.”

“The recipients are not only residents of Pune but some come from places like Nashik, Baramati etc. Through this donation we are not only helping the current team but also sending out a message to other youngsters who face physical challenges, that they too can play India’s favourite game – Cricket. In keeping with the Rotary International Theme for the Year – Create Hope in the World, and that is what we are trying to do,” said Commodore Ajay Chitnis.
