Hygiene concerns raised after viral video from Amrit Bharat Express; vendor removed, licence cancellation underway.

A disturbing video from the Erode–Jogbani Amrit Bharat Express (Train No. 16601) has sparked public outrage after showing a man washing used disposable food containers inside the train, allegedly for reuse. The footage raised serious concerns about hygiene and food safety standards onboard Indian trains.

Passengers on social media condemned the act as “filth disguised as service,” accusing vendors of risking public health for convenience and profit. The video shows the containers being washed in a train sink, prompting widespread criticism over sanitation practices.

Railways Responds

Following public backlash, Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) issued a statement confirming that:

  • The vendor involved has been identified and removed.
  • The process to cancel the licence of the responsible contractor is underway.
  • A heavy fine is being imposed.

Railway authorities said they have taken the matter “very seriously.”

Larger Concerns Over Food Safety

Several users shared similar past experiences of unsanitary practices on passenger trains, claiming these issues are not isolated. Complaints included:

  • Bad food quality and overpricing.
  • Vendors reusing trays or serving food in unhygienic conditions.
  • Lack of strict monitoring despite improved systems.

Although Indian Railways has taken measures like installing cameras in kitchens, mandating FSSAI certification for catering units, and conducting regular audits, the incident highlights gaps in implementation at ground level.
