CSK veteran’s calf injury may keep him out till late April, impacting team’s early matches

Chennai Super Kings may face a major setback early in IPL 2026 as veteran cricketer MS Dhoni is likely to remain out of action for nearly a month due to injury. Earlier, it was indicated that he would miss only two weeks, but fresh reports suggest a longer recovery period.

The 44-year-old suffered a calf strain during training ahead of the season. Following the injury, he stayed back in Chennai for rehabilitation instead of travelling with the squad for the opening matches. While initial communication pointed to a short break, the updated timeline now places his return closer to the last week of April.

This extended absence could significantly affect Chennai Super Kings’ campaign. If the current estimates hold, Dhoni may miss up to six matches in the early phase of the tournament. What first appeared to be a temporary setback could now become a defining factor in the team’s start to the season.

One of the biggest concerns is the high-voltage clash between Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians scheduled for April 23 at Wankhede Stadium. Based on the current recovery status, Dhoni is unlikely to feature in this match. Although a late return cannot be completely ruled out, there has been no official confirmation from the team management.

Dhoni, who retired from international cricket in 2020, continues to be a key figure in the IPL, drawing massive fan support every season. His absence not only affects the team combination but also leaves a gap in experience and leadership on the field.

In his absence, the team is expected to rely more on its younger players. Reports indicate that 19-year-old Kartik Sharma could be considered for a spot in the playing XI, though no official replacement has been announced yet. Leadership responsibilities are likely to rest with Ruturaj Gaikwad, along with support from the senior players.

With Dhoni’s return now uncertain until late April, Chennai Super Kings may have to navigate a crucial phase of the tournament without their most experienced player.
