Maharashtra Highway Traffic Police has started a six-month pilot project on the Mumbai-Nashik Highway using advanced camera-based speed enforcement systems to improve road safety and control overspeeding.

The initiative is being carried out with support from the Global Road Safety Partnership under the Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety (BIGRS), a global programme focused on reducing traffic-related deaths and injuries.

As part of the project, five modern laser-enabled speed detection cameras have been installed at different points along the highway. These devices are highly flexible and can be used as handheld units, mounted on tripods, or attached to patrol vehicles for mobile enforcement.

Officials said the cameras are capable of identifying speeding vehicles from a distance of up to 150 metres and can accurately record speeds reaching 320 km/h. The laser-based technology allows precise speed measurement for vehicles moving in both directions.

The system is designed to function effectively during nighttime and adverse weather conditions, including heavy rainfall. Features such as auto-focus and high-resolution image capture help authorities clearly identify traffic violators.

Authorities highlighted that overspeeding remains one of the biggest causes of fatal road accidents in Maharashtra. Data from the Maharashtra Road Crash Report for 2023 and 2024 revealed that nearly 70 percent of deadly crashes in the state were linked to speeding violations.

Apart from tracking speed limit violations, the cameras can also detect offences like failure to wear seat belts and riding without helmets, making the technology useful for broader traffic law enforcement.

To ensure smooth implementation, traffic police personnel have undergone technical and operational training provided by GRSP. The training covered camera handling, setup procedures, field operations, and enforcement methods.

Officials will review and analyse the data collected during the six-month trial period to evaluate the project’s effectiveness. Based on the findings, authorities may consider expanding the system to other highways across Maharashtra.
