All You Need to Know About India’s Fastest Train: 180 kmph Speed, 16 Coaches, Route Details
Indian Railways has taken a major leap in high-speed rail travel with the introduction of the Vande Bharat Sleeper train, designed for a top speed of 180 kmph, making it the fastest long-distance train in the country. The new-generation sleeper service is aimed at transforming overnight rail travel by offering faster, safer and more comfortable journeys.
India’s Fastest Train and Its Speed
The Vande Bharat Sleeper train has been engineered to reach a maximum design speed of 180 kmph. However, during regular commercial operations, it is expected to run at an average speed of 120–130 kmph, ensuring both efficiency and safety.
In comparison, the Namo Bharat train, currently India’s fastest operational train, runs at 160 kmph on the Delhi–Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS).
Route and Inauguration
Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off India’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper train on the Howrah–Kamakhya (Guwahati) route, strengthening rail connectivity between eastern and northeastern India. The service connects Howrah near Kolkata with Kamakhya Junction in Assam, significantly reducing travel time on this busy corridor.
Coach Composition and Passenger Capacity
The Vande Bharat Sleeper train features a 16-coach rake, designed to cater exclusively to air-conditioned travel. The composition includes:
- 11 AC 3-Tier coaches
- 4 AC 2-Tier coaches
- 1 First AC coach
The total passenger capacity stands at 823, with:
- AC 3-Tier: 611 passengers
- AC 2-Tier: 188 passengers
- First AC: 24 passengers
Reduced Travel Time
One of the key highlights of the Vande Bharat Sleeper is its ability to cut down long-distance travel duration. On the Howrah–Guwahati (Kamakhya) route, the train is expected to reduce travel time by approximately 2.5 hours, making overnight journeys faster and more convenient.
Hygiene and Passenger Comfort
Hygiene has been given special attention in the Vande Bharat Sleeper. The train uses advanced disinfectant technology capable of eliminating 99 per cent of germs. Passengers are also provided with fresh linens and towels, enhancing comfort during long journeys.
Safety Features
Safety remains a top priority, with the installation of the indigenous Kavach automatic train protection system. In addition, CCTV surveillance cameras have been fitted across coaches to ensure passenger security throughout the journey.
Advanced Technology
The Vande Bharat Sleeper is equipped with automatic sliding doors, which remain closed while the train is in motion and open only when it halts at stations. This feature improves safety and maintains controlled cabin conditions during high-speed travel.
A New Era for Indian Railways
With high speed capability, modern amenities, enhanced safety systems and reduced travel time, the Vande Bharat Sleeper train marks a significant milestone in Indian Railways’ journey towards world-class rail infrastructure and next-generation passenger services.
