Cops voice displeasure as govt cancels leave encashment; decision changed after govt intervenes

The recent decision by the government to cancel the concession of encashment of additional earned leave of 15 days for officers from the rank of police constable to police inspector in the state police force sparked dissatisfaction among the police personnel.
The government’s move to revoke the benefit, which has been in place since 1989, has led to a wave of discontent, with several officers and employees expressing their unhappiness on social media platforms.
The additional earned leave of 15 days, along with the provision to encash leave upon retirement, served as a compensatory measure for police officers who often work extended hours and have limited holidays compared to other government departments.
Unlike their counterparts in other sectors who have regular holidays on Saturdays and Sundays, police personnel are frequently on duty during weekends, festivals, celebrations, anniversaries, and other government holidays.
The unique work structure of the police force, including extended duty hours during sessions, festival-related duties, and security arrangements, limits their ability to take regular leaves.
The cancellation of the leave encashment concession has triggered a strong reaction from the police force, who argue that the additional earned leave was a form of compensation for their demanding work schedules and the sacrifices they make, such as missing festivals and family time.
Many officers have taken to social media to express their displeasure, and there is a growing demand for the government to reconsider and withdraw this decision.
Rashmi Shukla, Director General of Police, Maharashtra State, has also voiced her concerns, highlighting the challenges faced by the police force and urging the government to reconsider the cancellation of the leave encashment concession.
There was a notable appeal to Devendra Fadnavis, the former Chief Minister of Maharashtra, for his intervention in the matter.
Officers and personnel are hoping that Fadnavis, known for his understanding of governance issues, will address their concerns and advocate for a reconsideration of the decision.
