Environment activists clean Jambhulwadi lake

Hundreds turned up to be a part of the mega drive held to clean-up hyacinth from Jambhulwadi lake ahead of Katraj.

An event conducted under the aegis of Swachh Pune Swachh Bharat saw many NGOs and social groups take part along with students of Symbiosis college. The major contributors being, ExploreIT, Adar Poonawala Clean City Intiative, Veer Vidhya, Work For Compassion, We Philants, PMC and members of fishermen community.

Jambhulwadi lake which just an year back was a clean water body was source of livelihood for nearly 60 fishermen families.

Urbanisation took its toll and the rampant and illegal discharge of sewage into the lake by the near by societies led to complete destruction of lake’s eco system, thereby affecting the livelihood of so many families.

Wg Cdr Puneet Sharma founder member of Swachh Pune Swachh Bharat narrates, how a call by Vickrant Singh, a young swachh warrior and activist made him mobilise the support for this worthy cause. In a three hour action packed morning tonnes of water hyacinth removed with more than sixty percent of the lake freed from this menace. Come next Sunday the team is getting ready to once again gather full strength to achieve their objective of hyacinth free Jambhulwadi lake.

Wing Cdr Sharma urged all young volunteers from Pune city to join the clean up drive.
