SIM binding mandatory, RailOne replaces UTS app, UPI security tightened; LPG, ATF prices revised

A series of important changes have come into effect from March 1, 2026, impacting digital payments, train ticket bookings, social media usage and fuel prices. These updates are expected to influence both daily routines and monthly budgets for households across India.

Here is a detailed look at the key changes.

WhatsApp SIM Binding Becomes Mandatory

Under the Telecom Cyber Security (TCS) Rules, 2024, the Department of Telecommunications has made SIM binding compulsory for app-based communication services in India.

From March 1, WhatsApp accounts must remain linked to the physical SIM card inserted in the primary device. Unlike the earlier “verify-once” model — where users could continue using WhatsApp even after removing the SIM — the new rule requires the SIM to remain active in the device.

Web instances of such apps will also be logged out periodically, not later than six hours, with users required to re-link via QR code. The move is aimed at preventing fraud and cybercrime.

The rule applies to several communication platforms, including WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal and others.

Indian Railways Replaces UTS App With RailOne

Indian Railways has discontinued its Unreserved Ticketing System (UTS) mobile application from March 1. It has been replaced by the new RailOne app.

RailOne will offer multiple services, including:

  • Reserved and unreserved ticket bookings
  • Platform tickets
  • Train enquiries and PNR status
  • Journey planning
  • Rail Madad services
  • Food ordering on trains
  • Freight service information

Passengers booking general or platform tickets will now have to use the RailOne app.

UPI Payments To Get Extra Security Layer

Banks have introduced stricter authentication norms for higher-value UPI transactions. Instead of relying only on a UPI PIN, users may now be required to complete additional biometric or multi-factor authentication for certain transactions.

The move aims to enhance transaction security and reduce fraud.

Minimum Bank Balance Rules Updated

Several public sector banks have reportedly waived minimum balance penalty charges for savings accounts. However, private sector banks are yet to fully follow suit.

Customers are advised to check with their respective banks to understand updated balance requirements and avoid penalties.

LPG Cylinder Prices Revised

Oil marketing companies have reduced the prices of 19 kg commercial LPG cylinders by Rs 28 to Rs 31 across major metro cities for March 2026.

However, the price of 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinders remains unchanged.

ATF Prices Hiked

Air turbine fuel (ATF) prices have been increased from March 1. Indian Oil raised ATF prices by around Rs 4,977 to Rs 5,498 across major metro cities.

Since ATF is a significant operational cost for airlines, this hike may eventually influence airfares.

CNG, PNG, Petrol And Diesel Prices

As of now, there has been no change in CNG, PNG, petrol and diesel prices. However, rates may be revised depending on international crude oil movements.

Last month, some city gas distributors had reduced CNG and PNG prices, offering partial relief to consumers.

With these changes now in effect, users are advised to review how they use digital services, manage banking transactions and plan travel or fuel expenses in the coming months.
