A major emergency unfolded on the Mumbai–Pune Expressway on Tuesday evening after a tanker transporting highly inflammable propylene gas met with an accident near the Adoshi Tunnel. The incident immediately raised safety concerns, forcing authorities to completely shut down traffic moving towards Mumbai and triggering massive congestion along the stretch.

The tanker was en route from Pune to Mumbai when it lost balance at a sharp turn close to the tunnel area. The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, causing the tanker to overturn near the entrance of the tunnel. While a potentially catastrophic situation was narrowly avoided, the incident became serious when gas leakage was detected soon after the accident. The mishap occurred at around 5:00 pm, creating panic in the surrounding area.

Once officials confirmed that the tanker was carrying propylene, a gas known for its highly flammable and explosive nature, emergency protocols were immediately activated. As a precautionary step, all vehicles heading towards Mumbai were stopped without delay, while traffic moving towards Pune was allowed only in a regulated manner to minimize risk.

Emergency response teams reached the spot promptly after the accident was reported. Personnel from the Borghat Police, IRB Highway Police, Devdoot emergency services, and the Help Foundation were deployed at the site. Firefighters from Khopoli also arrived and began intensive efforts to contain the gas leakage and secure the area.

To handle the situation more effectively, a specialized expert team was called in to assist with stopping the gas leak. Authorities have clearly stated that vehicular movement will remain suspended until the area is declared completely safe. Additional security arrangements have been put in place around the Adoshi Tunnel as a preventive measure.

The accident has led to severe traffic jams on the expressway, causing inconvenience to commuters. Police have advised motorists to avoid the route and use alternative roads until normal conditions are restored. Senior officials are closely monitoring the evolving situation, and further updates are expected as operations continue.

As containment efforts remain ongoing, officials are prioritizing public safety and cautioning travelers to stay alert and cooperative, with normal traffic expected to resume only after all risks have been fully eliminated.
