Pune: In a significant step towards promoting electric mobility, the Maharashtra government has cleared the installation of eight charging stations on the busy Pune–Mumbai Expressway. The project will be carried out by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), which will soon begin site surveys to finalize suitable spots along the 94-km route.
According to MSRDC officials, each charging station will be equipped with modern infrastructure and will allow multiple electric vehicles to charge simultaneously. This is expected to reduce range anxiety among EV users and make intercity travel between Pune and Mumbai smoother.
Rajesh Patil, joint managing director of MSRDC, said, “The growing number of EVs on the Pune–Mumbai Expressway makes it necessary to provide charging infrastructure. These stations will encourage more people to switch to electric mobility without worrying about charging on long journeys.”
The Pune–Mumbai Expressway is one of the busiest highways in the country, carrying thousands of vehicles daily. Currently, EV users face challenges due to the lack of adequate fast-charging points on this stretch. The addition of eight stations is likely to benefit both private EV owners and fleet operators.
Officials added that the locations will be selected strategically to ensure even coverage across the expressway, with a focus on user convenience and safety. Once operational, these stations are expected to further accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles in Maharashtra.
