Mumbai, September 2, 2025: Manoj Jarange Patil’s demand for the implementation of the Hyderabad Gazette has been accepted by the government, raising the question: What exactly is this Hyderabad Gazette?

The Maratha activist has been on a hunger strike at Mumbai’s Azad Maidan for the fifth consecutive day, demanding the implementation of Hyderabad, Satara, and Bombay Gazettes. Among these, he placed special emphasis on the Hyderabad Gazette.

What is the Hyderabad Gazette?

The Hyderabad Gazette is an official gazette from the era of the Hyderabad princely state.

  • It records the Maratha community as ‘Kunbi Maratha’.
  • The 1881 census of the Hyderabad State mentions the term “Kunbi Maratha” to describe agriculturists.
  • From 1902 to 1948, the Hyderabad administration conducted studies on various social groups and declared some as educationally and socially backward.
  • These declarations were officially published in the Gazette.

Following discussions with the Maratha Sub-Committee led by Vikhe Patil, the government has assured that a Government Resolution (GR) will be issued within an hour for its implementation.

The state has also promised to review the Satara, Pune, and Aundh Gazettes at the earliest. Additionally, legal issues related to these will be addressed within 15 days.

Jarange further stated that the government has been given two months to finalize the matter of treating Maratha and Kunbi as the same community, based on 5.8 million records.
