In a welcoming news for Pune-Mumbai commuters, the train travel time is expected to reduce by 20-30 minutes soon.
According to a report published by the Indian Express, the Central Railway (CR) is conducting a survey to plan a low-gradient alternative rail route for the existing Pune-Mumbai connection.

The survey, which began five months ago, aimed at determining alternate routes that will make the ghat section alignment less steep.
A feasibility report will determine the optimal alignment, considering factors like cost and terrain. The proposed tracks will be to the east of the existing tracks and will bypass Lonavala, said a senior CR official.

“The steep gradient of the existing alignment between Mumbai and Pune in the Ghat section is 1.37. The project aims to reduce the gradient to 1.100,” said Swapnil Neela, Chief Public Relations Officer, at Central Railway.
The reduced gradient will decrease the need for banker locomotives when manoeuvring trains through the ghat’s steep slopes. “Passenger trains may no longer require banker locomotives due to the reduced slope. They might still be needed for goods/freight trains,” he added.
According to Swapnil Neela, the new route will be longer than the existing alignment but will not require additional engine power to run the train. He added that the journey time could be reduced as compared to the current route.
Apart from this, Central Railway has decided to add at least 10 more services on this route. Once the Kalyan yard work is completed and the new platforms at Panvel and LTT are operational, CR will be able to increase the number of trains by 10.
