Maharashtra, October 24, 2025: To break the monopoly of app-based taxi services Ola and Uber, the Government of India’s Cooperation Department is set to soon launch a new service called ‘Bharat Taxi’. This initiative will be operated under the Multi-State Cooperative Taxi Cooperative Limited, marking India’s first-ever cooperative taxi service.

As part of its pilot project, the service will initially be launched in Delhi, Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Uttar Pradesh, and will later be expanded across the country.

Key Features and Benefits of Bharat Taxi:

The biggest difference between Ola, Uber, and Bharat Taxi is that in this model, taxi drivers will not merely be employees but co-owners of the cooperative. This will ensure that profits directly reach the drivers, preventing their financial exploitation and giving them dignity in their profession.

No Commission and Increased Earnings: Unlike Ola and Uber, which deduct high commissions from drivers’ earnings, this cooperative model will not charge any commission, directly benefiting drivers and increasing their monthly income.

No Surge Pricing: During festivals or periods of high demand, private aggregators often charge unreasonable surge pricing (increased fares). The Bharat Taxi app will have no surge pricing, ensuring that passengers get taxis at transparent and affordable rates.

₹300 Crore Capital and Institutional Support: For this ambitious project, an authorized capital of ₹300 crore has been raised. The service has strong backing from eight major cooperative institutions in the country, including Amul, the National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC), and IFFCO.

Management: Jayen Mehta, Managing Director of Amul, has been appointed as the Chairman of the cooperative taxi organization. The national launch of the app is expected by the end of this year.
