India began their three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe on a winning note, registering a seven-wicket victory in the opening encounter at Harare. The match also turned into a memorable outing for 15-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who produced a blistering half-century and created a new world record in T20 international cricket.
Playing under the captaincy of Shreyas Iyer, India chased down a target of 125 with ease. Suryavanshi stole the spotlight with an explosive 59 off just 19 deliveries, including four fours and four sixes. His knock helped India overcome an early setback and put the visitors firmly in control of the chase.
Suryavanshi’s innings also saw him become the youngest player to score a half-century in men’s T20 international cricket, according to the report. His aggressive batting proved crucial after Abhishek Sharma was dismissed for eight, giving Zimbabwe some early hope.
Zimbabwe, batting first after India won the toss and opted to bowl, struggled to build momentum. Mayank Yadav and Prince Yadav struck early to put the hosts under pressure.
Ryan Burl scored 35 off 26 balls, while Wesley Madhevere contributed 34 off 39 deliveries. Wicketkeeper-batter Tadiwanashe Marumani added a 20-ball 20, helping Zimbabwe reach 124 for seven in their allotted 20 overs.
For India, Mayank and Prince picked up two wickets each, while Shivam Dube and Ravi Bishnoi claimed one wicket apiece.
India’s chase was powered by Suryavanshi’s counter-attacking innings. Ishan Kishan also played an important role, scoring 35 from 24 deliveries as the visitors maintained control of the required run rate.
Captain Shreyas Iyer then ensured there were no late hiccups, remaining unbeaten on 28 off 24 balls. Tilak Varma stayed not out on five as India completed the chase with seven wickets in hand and 40 deliveries to spare.
The victory marked a successful beginning to Iyer’s stint as captain in the series. India will now look to carry the momentum into the remaining matches and seal the three-match T20I series.
