The agency has removed Aadhaar records of deceased individuals across India, using verified data from multiple government systems.
UIDAI has deactivated nearly 2 crore Aadhaar numbers across the country in a major effort to curb identity fraud and prevent the misuse of Aadhaar-based services. The deactivated records belong primarily to deceased individuals, whose details were verified through multiple official sources before removal.
The authority confirmed that data from the Registrar General of India, state and union territory departments, the Public Distribution System, the National Social Assistance Programme and other government bodies was used to identify deceased persons accurately. Once verified, their Aadhaar numbers were permanently deactivated. UIDAI reiterated that Aadhaar numbers are never reissued to anyone else.
This step was taken after rising concerns about fraud involving Aadhaar information being used by hackers or misused for welfare schemes. Deactivating Aadhaar numbers of deceased persons ensures that no unauthorised transactions, benefit claims or identity-related criminal activities can occur under their name.
UIDAI noted that if a deceased family member’s Aadhaar is still active, it can be reported through the myAadhaar portal. This dedicated service, launched earlier this year, is available in 25 states and union territories that use the Civil Registration System. After verification of the information submitted through the portal, UIDAI deactivates the Aadhaar number to prevent misuse.
Alongside the cleanup of its records, UIDAI has introduced a redesigned Aadhaar app to improve user security and make identity verification seamless and paperless. The upgraded app supports up to five family profiles on a single device, allows users to choose how much Aadhaar information they want to share, and offers one-click biometric lock/unlock to prevent unauthorised access. The app also supports QR-based offline verification through verifiable digital credentials.
The nationwide deactivation drive and the new app reflect UIDAI’s larger strategy: tightening identity protection, preventing fraud at the source, and making Aadhaar usage more secure for millions of citizens.
