As, Sanjay, a close associate of outgoing WFI chief Brij Bhushan became the new WFI president with his panel winning 13 of the 15 posts in the elections in New Delhi on Thursday, Olympic champion Sakshi Malik, one of the leading faces of the protest and a staunch critic of Brij Bhushan’s reign, who was forced to resign from his position as the WFI president, has resigned from the sport, with teary eyes.

The wrestlers underlined their disappointment with the government, claiming it couldn’t fulfill its promise to keep out Brij Bhushan’s family members and associates from the election process.

Meanwhile, Wrestler Bajrang Punia is set to return his Padma Shri in solidarity.

Back in June, before the wrestlers called off their protests, Sports Minister Anurag Thakur had assured Sakshi, Vinesh and Bajrang Punia that wrestlers would have a big say in deciding who occupies the posts of president, general secretary and treasurer.

“He (Sanjay Singh) is Brij Bhushan’s right-hand man. He is more special to him than his own son. Now that he is president, the coming batch of women wrestlers will also fall prey,” Vinesh said.
