Jain community protests at Azad Maidan against Jharkhand govt’s decision to make Sammed Shikharji a tourist destination

Mumbai: Over 50,000 people of Jain community have gathered for Sabha at Azad Maidan in Mumbai from 8 in morning today to oppose the Jhakand government’s decision to make Sammed Shikharji as a tourist destination. Various protests were observed by the Jain community on nation-level for not making the Sammed Shikharji as a tourist destination. Due to the huge crowd the roads are blocked around Azad maidan and people are demanding that the pilgrimage site should not be made a tourist destination.

The Jain community across the country is uniting to save a holy Jain hill in Jharkhand. People from the Jain community have been peacefully protesting for their demands in Jharkhand, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Delhi for the past week. The community is opposing the decision to make Sammed Shikhar ji, a Jains’ holy site in Jharkhand, a tourist destination, and demanding to take the decision back. The Jain community claims that making it a tourist destination will destroy its sanctity.

The Lord Parasnath Parvat hill is located in the Giridih district of Jharkhand. This mountain is named after Parasnath, Jainism’s 23rd Tirthankar. Sammed Shikhar ji is located on this mountain, which is also known as ‘Shikhar ji’.The Jain community especially holds a very important place for the Shvetambara community. It is believed that 20 of Jainism’s 24 Tirthankaras attained salvation here. Every year, thousands of Jain devotees from around the world come here to complete the 27-kilometer circumambulation and reach the summit.
