Labrador Dies During Train Journey to Pune; Owner Alleges Dog Was Thrown Onto Railway Platform
One Labrador reportedly died and three others fell ill during a train journey from Ludhiana to Pune, prompting allegations of negligence and improper handling against railway authorities.
A disturbing incident involving the transportation of pet dogs by train has sparked concern after a Labrador Retriever reportedly died during a journey from Ludhiana to Pune, while three other dogs developed serious health issues.
The incident occurred on April 19 when Ludhiana resident Balbir Singh travelled to Pune for his sister’s wedding with his four pet Labradors. The dogs were booked for transport in the brake van of the Jhelum Express.
According to the pet owner, all four Labradors were healthy before the journey, but one dog died en route while the remaining three developed high fever and trauma-related illness.
Singh alleged that before the trip, he had approached railway officials in Ludhiana for guidance regarding the safe transportation of his pets. He claimed he was directed to a private animal transporter and was assured that the dogs would either be housed in separate cages or accommodated in a sufficiently large enclosure.
However, Singh alleged that the arrangements promised were not provided.
He claimed that two large Labradors were placed inside a single small cage and that the compartment used for transportation was unhygienic and unsuitable for animals.
According to the family, they discovered the deteriorating condition of the dogs only after checking on them during the journey. One Labrador reportedly died near Jhansi, while the others showed signs of illness.
The owner further alleged that railway staff did not inform the family about the dog’s condition during the journey.
The incident became more contentious after the death of the animal.
Singh alleged that railway personnel insisted the deceased dog’s body be removed at Jhansi station despite the family’s request to take it to Pune for final rites.
He also claimed that the animal’s remains were handled insensitively, forcing the family to disembark at Jhansi and make their own arrangements.
The incident prompted Singh to seek assistance from animal rights activist and former Union minister Maneka Gandhi, who reportedly called for an inquiry into the matter.
Railway authorities have rejected allegations of improper handling.
Officials stated that the deceased animal’s body was handed over to the passenger at Jhansi in accordance with established procedures.
A spokesperson from the Jhansi Division of North Central Railway maintained that the prescribed protocol was followed in the matter.
Despite the response, the pet owner said he has not received a satisfactory explanation regarding the circumstances that led to the death of the Labrador and the illness of the other three dogs.
The case has raised fresh questions about the safety and welfare of animals transported by rail.
Animal welfare advocates say the incident highlights the need for stricter monitoring, better facilities and clearer accountability mechanisms for the transportation of pets on long-distance train journeys.
The three surviving Labradors reportedly recovered after receiving medical attention, while the family continues to seek answers regarding the death of their pet.
