Mumbai, March 26, 2026: The Maharashtra government has initiated steps to address the recurring onion crisis by focusing on long-term solutions. A high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis was held at Vidhan Bhavan to discuss issues faced by onion farmers.

During the meeting, the Chief Minister emphasized the need for a permanent resolution to the problem and announced the formation of a committee comprising senior officials from the agriculture, finance, and marketing departments. The panel has been tasked with recommending immediate measures as well as implementing long-term strategies to stabilize the sector.

Fadnavis also stated that coordination with the central government would be strengthened to curb irregularities in onion trade and boost exports, thereby ensuring stable prices. A meeting with Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal is expected soon to discuss these measures.

The committee has been directed to explore crop diversification in key onion-producing districts such as Nashik, Pune, Ahilyanagar, and Solapur. The government plans to introduce these measures as early as the upcoming Kharif season, with a focus on selecting suitable crop varieties based on productivity and market demand.

The Chief Minister highlighted the importance of encouraging farmers to shift toward alternative crops that offer better returns than onion cultivation. He noted that implementing such strategies over the next two to three years could help balance production and supply, ultimately benefiting farmers.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Ajit Pawar and several ministers, including Girish Mahajan, Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil, Jaykumar Rawal, Dattatray Bharne, Narhari Zirwal, Dadaji Bhuse and Chhagan Bhujbal, along with senior officials.

The government has reiterated its commitment to ensuring sustainable agricultural practices and better income stability for farmers across the state.
