The State Human Rights Commission has lodged a complaint regarding the massive toxic pollution of the Godavari river in Nanded, based on a complaint filed by Jaymala Dhankikar on February 6, 2025. Dhankikar’s complaint highlighted the severe pollution caused by the discharge of drainage, filth, and toxic waste from Nanded into the Godavari river at Nava Ghat.

The complaint alleged that the pollution levels have reached alarming proportions, making the river’s water unsafe for human consumption or other uses. The residents living along the riverbanks are facing serious health risks, and immediate action is necessary to prevent a catastrophic situation.

Dhankikar’s complaint was supported by letters sent to various authorities, including the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, the Secretary, Union Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, and the Chief Minister’s Office, among others.

The complaint urged the authorities to take immediate action, including conducting an inspection, taking action against polluters, implementing pollution control measures, and providing relief to affected residents.

Studies have shown that the Godavari river has been polluted by industrial effluents, particularly from the MIDC area in Nanded ¹ ². The pollution has led to high levels of Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and heavy metals, including iron, in the river water.

The State Human Rights Commission’s complaint is a significant step towards addressing the critical issue of pollution in the Godavari river. The commission’s intervention is expected to prompt the authorities to take swift action to protect the river and its inhabitants.
