Pune, February 21, 2026: On February 17, 2026, complainant woman Kavita Pappu Rathod, age about 30 years, resident of Madhya Pradesh was travelling with her husband, mother-in-law, three daughters and one son. The family had come to Manmad–Solapur section for labour work and reached Pune Railway Station on February 16.
On February 17 they came to Platform No.03 to go towards Khandwa. Since no train was available, they sat on the platform and had food there. Later, at about 01:30 hrs, when the complainant’s husband got up to go towards the washroom, he noticed that their 4-year-old daughter was missing. He informed his wife and they started searching, but when the child could not be found, the complainant along with her husband approached GRP at Station.
CCTV footage was checked along with the complainant, in which a man wearing a red T-shirt and shorts was seen holding the child’s hand and taking her away. As the child appeared to know the person, she was seen going with him without resistance. The complainant identified the child and stated that the person had earlier helped them and had interacted with the family.
Based on CCTV tracking, RPF and GRP teams searched the surrounding areas including Budhwar Peth and nearby labour sites. Information was received from labourers that a person had gone towards the railway hospital road with a child. Further tracking revealed that the person later returned towards the station. At about 05:30 hrs, the child’s father informed them that the accused had brought the child back near Platform No.03. Acting swiftly, staff deployed at parcel gate detained the suspect at about 06:00 hrs.
During interrogation, the accused disclosed his name as Mahesh Mamal Yadav, age 25 years, resident of Balaghat, Madhya Pradesh. The child was handed over to GRP Pune custody. During questioning by female GRP staff, the child stated that the accused (“Kaka”) had taken her away on the pretext of giving biscuits, taken her to a dark place and committed inappropriate acts with her. Blood stains were observed on the child’s clothes and she complained of stomach pain.
Both the accused and the victim were sent for medical examination. The preliminary medical report confirmed sexual assault. Accordingly, GRP Pune registered a case on February 17 under Sections 137(2), 65(2) BNS and Sections 4 & 6 of the POCSO Act. The accused was arrested and further investigation is being carried out by the concerned Police Inspector.
