Mumbai Experiences Pre-Monsoon Showers and Gusty Winds; IMD Issues Yellow Alert for City and Surrounding Areas
Mumbai and its nearby cities experienced much-needed relief from the intense summer heat on Tuesday night, as pre-monsoon showers swept through the region accompanied by gusty winds. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier issued a Yellow Alert for Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar districts, warning of rain and thunderstorms.
Throughout Tuesday, Mumbaikars witnessed overcast skies and strong, dusty winds that eventually led to a bout of rain by nightfall. Areas such as Dahisar, Jogeshwari, Borivali, Bandra, Kurla, and Powai were among those that reported heavy showers and thunderstorms later in the evening.
The IMD had forecast light rainfall and thunderstorm activity for the city beginning the night of May 6 or the early hours of May 7. The sudden change in weather offered brief respite from the sweltering conditions, although the humidity remained high. Mumbai is expected to see more drizzles on May 8 and 9, along with mostly cloudy skies.
According to weather officials, the pre-monsoon activity has been triggered by western disturbances that are drawing moisture into the region. These weather patterns have also brought hailstorms to places like Sinnar and Lasalgaon in the Nashik district. In Mumbai, however, the winds stirred up a significant amount of dust, making it difficult for pedestrians during the evening.
Despite the cooling effect of the showers, humidity levels are unlikely to dip significantly. On Tuesday, Mumbai recorded the highest minimum temperature of the year at 28.9°C — 2.5°C above the usual average. The maximum temperature reached 34°C, according to data from the Santacruz observatory.
The IMD issued a nowcast warning at 9:35 PM on May 6, predicting thunderstorms with lightning and moderate rainfall, along with gusty winds reaching speeds of 50–60 km/h. These conditions were expected to continue over the next 3–4 hours across parts of Mumbai City, Mumbai Suburbs, Thane, Palghar, and Nashik. Residents were advised to take caution while stepping out during this period.
On social media platform X (formerly Twitter), residents shared videos and reactions to the sudden weather shift. One humorous post from Jogeshwari read, “Raining heavily here and it is too windy. Cyclone-like situation. Please go to Churchgate now so that Mumbai Indians can get 1 point and play is called off.”
Meanwhile, Gujarat has also been experiencing heavy pre-monsoon showers for the past two days. The influence of western winds is expected to continue affecting Maharashtra, with the Vidarbha region placed under an Orange Alert. Northern parts of Maharashtra are likely to see more intense pre-monsoon activity than Mumbai and its adjoining areas.
For Wednesday, the IMD has predicted a maximum temperature of around 33°C and a minimum of 28°C for Mumbai, with more thunderstorms and rainfall on the horizon.
