The long-pending Mumbai-Goa Highway project, under construction for over 14 years, continues to face delays, leaving travelers frustrated and sparking political debates. With Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led governments in Maharashtra and Goa, citizens hoped the project would finally be completed under unified leadership.

The highway’s poor condition forces many Mumbai residents to use the Satara route to reach Goa. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the Maharashtra Public Works Department (PWD) have announced another delay, setting a new target to complete the project within two years.

Former PWD Minister Ravindra Chavan acknowledged delays in constructing major sections, including 14 bridges and service roads, during a September 2023 update. “Our goal is to complete the work within the next two years,” he said, citing challenges faced since the project’s inception.

The 555-kilometer highway connects Mumbai to Goa and is a critical route for industrial, trade, and tourism sectors. Of the total stretch, 471 kilometers lie in Maharashtra, passing through key regions like Panvel, Mahad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg. Initially planned under the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model, the project was divided into 10 construction packages. Delays stemmed from issues like forest clearances, land acquisition, and substandard construction work.

One of the most awaited sections includes twin tunnels at the Kashedi Ghat, designed to improve safety and speed in the hilly area. A PWD official said the tunnels are nearing completion and are expected to open fully by Republic Day, January 26. However, earlier openings during Ganeshotsav were plagued by water leakage and electrical issues, leading to closures. Political controversies have further marred progress, with leaders blaming administrative lapses for delays.
