Mumbai Man's Raincoat Toss Causes Chaos at Churchgate Station, Trains Delayed Amid Mumbai Downpour
A well-meaning gesture to protect a friend from rain led to significant disruptions at Churchgate railway station, with train services halted and delays across Mumbai.
In a dramatic turn of events at Churchgate railway station on Monday, a young man’s attempt to shield his female friend from heavy rainfall led to considerable disruption in train services. Amid the severe downpour affecting Mumbai, the man, waiting on platform number 2, noticed his friend on platform number 3 without cover. In an effort to protect her, he tossed his raincoat across the platforms.
However, the raincoat ended up snagged in the overhead electric wires strung between the platforms, causing immediate chaos. This interference forced a temporary halt in train operations as railway authorities acted quickly to cut off power to the affected lines and remove the entangled raincoat. This led to a 25-minute disruption in local train services and a heightened police presence at the station to manage the situation.

The young man was detained by railway police following the incident, which was captured on video and quickly went viral on social media. The disruption occurred amidst heavy rainfall that had already severely impacted Mumbai’s infrastructure, including widespread waterlogging and flight diversions.
The rain had been relentless, with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) recording over 200 mm of rainfall in various areas within 24 hours. This contributed to the temporary halt of local train services between Kalyan and Thakurli during peak hours.
Train services resumed normally later in the morning, with the Western Railway reporting delays of 5 to 10 minutes, and the Central Railway’s services resuming around 7:40 am with delays of 20 to 25 minutes. The continuous rain also caused the Mithi River to overflow, compounding the challenges faced by the city during this monsoon season.
