Mumbai Set To Launch Water Metro: Minister Nitesh Rane Asks For DPR In 3 Months
Mumbai, June 17, 2025 – In a move aimed at transforming urban mobility and easing the daily commute for Mumbaikars, the Maharashtra government is planning to introduce a Water Metro system in the city. Maharashtra’s Minister for Fisheries and Ports, Nitesh Rane, shared the update on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle following a crucial meeting held at Mantralaya today.
The meeting focused on laying the groundwork for the proposed Water Metro project and included a detailed presentation prepared with the support of Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL), which has already successfully implemented a Water Metro service in Kerala.
Minister Rane mentioned that the discussions were highly encouraging and that instructions have been issued to relevant departments to begin the necessary procedures for implementing the project without delay. “A Water Metro will not only reduce the pressure on existing road and rail transport but also open up a new, eco-friendly mode of public transit for Mumbai,” Rane stated.
The meeting was attended by P. Pradeep, CEO of the Maharashtra Maritime Board, representatives from Kochi Metro Rail, and senior officials from related departments. The concept aims to connect various coastal and waterfront locations in and around Mumbai using water-based transit, offering faster, congestion-free travel.
The initiative is seen as a major step in integrating maritime infrastructure into urban transport planning, and if executed successfully, could become a model for other coastal cities across India.
