In a refreshing boost to Mumbai’s urban landscape, the city is all set to unveil its newest recreational gem—a 7.5-kilometre-long sea-facing promenade—offering Mumbaikars a much-needed breath of fresh air along the coastline. Stretching from Priyadarshini Park at Breach Candy all the way to the southern tip of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, this sprawling walkway is expected to open its gates to the public on June 15, transforming a stretch of the city into a vibrant, green escape.

A Promenade Built for the People

Crafted with pedestrians, joggers, and cyclists in mind, the 20-metre-wide pathway is part of a 70-hectare vision aimed at turning the coastal belt into one of Mumbai’s largest open public spaces. The promenade itself spans 12 hectares and is being developed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), while a five-hectare central median is being taken up by Tata Sons.

An impressive 70% of the promenade is dedicated to lush green landscaping, with the remaining 30% reserved for walkways, cycling lanes, and places to sit and relax. The initiative is part of a comprehensive master plan designed by global infrastructure consultancy AECOM, which is reshaping how Mumbaikars experience their city’s seafront.

Easy Access with Thoughtful Planning

Designed for maximum accessibility, the promenade will include twenty underpasses placed every 400 metres, seamlessly connecting the seafront with the inner city. In addition, there will be nine major entry points, including those at Setalvad Lane, Tata Garden, Mahalaxmi, Lotus Jetty, Haji Ali Juice Centre, Atria Mall, and Madraswadi in Worli. While the promenade will remain open around the clock, the landscaped parks within the stretch will be accessible daily between 8 AM and 8 PM.

A Project Powered by CSR – Reliance Leads the Way

What makes this public space initiative even more remarkable is its funding model. The ₹500 crore project is entirely financed through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) contributions, with Reliance Industries taking the lead. According to civic officials, Reliance was selected because of its successful track record in large-scale green development, including the creation of the Vantara forest in Jamnagar.

Several other applicants—including JSW, Raymond, Vedanta, and Torrent Power—were considered, but ultimately fell short due to one reason or another. For instance, JSW offered only 20 acres instead of the required 53 hectares, and Vedanta’s proposal was significantly under the minimum investment benchmark.

What’s Coming Up? A Complete Coastal Experience

Beyond the walkway, the larger open space project promises a wide range of features: a Miyawaki forest, musical fountains, butterfly gardens, yoga paths, outdoor gyms, playgrounds for children, senior-friendly zones, and even open-air theatres. Once final approvals are granted, Reliance will begin work on detailed designs for the full transformation of the coastal stretch.

The 10.58-km Mumbai Coastal Road, already operational and connecting Marine Drive’s Princess Street Flyover to the Sea Link, is set to complement this promenade by improving connectivity and easing traffic congestion in South Mumbai.

Mumbai has always been known for its restless energy and tight spaces. But this upcoming promenade offers something different—a tranquil stretch where the city breathes with its people. Whether you’re out for a morning jog, an evening stroll, or simply to watch the waves crash against the rocks, this coastal road promises to bring the sea closer to your everyday life.
