Rescue efforts are ongoing as more individuals are feared to be trapped under the rubble. This incident marks the first major building collapse tragedy of the current monsoon season, as Mumbai and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region have been battered by torrential rains over the past 72 hours.
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis reviewed the disruptions caused by the heavy rainfall in Nagpur and instructed the administration to remain vigilant to ensure the safety and convenience of citizens. In a post on the microblogging site X, Deputy Chief Minister Fadnavis stated, “Life has been disrupted due to heavy rains in Nagpur city and district. I am in constant touch with the Divisional Commissioner, Collector, and local administration, and the Collector himself is visiting the city.”
He further mentioned, “Schools have been closed and residents of low-lying areas where water has entered have been shifted to safer places. Some roads are closed in some areas. It has been directed that the administration should be vigilant so that there is no inconvenience to the citizens.”
Fadnavis also noted that in the Nagpur division, some parts of Gadchiroli have been disconnected due to the rains. The Divisional Commissioner is in constant communication with all district collectors, who have been asked to put all systems on alert.
The collapse of the Rubinissa Manzil building highlights the urgent need for ensuring the safety of old and dilapidated structures, especially during the monsoon season.
