Pune: In a crackdown against underage driving and violation of the motor vehicles act, authorities have implemented stricter measures that will hold parents accountable for the actions of their erring children. Under the new regulations, parents will be subjected to penalties and fines, while minors under the age of 18 who violate traffic rules will face the revocation of their license until they reach the age of 25, said officials.

According to traffic officials, parents will be held accountable for the actions of their children under 18 years of age. If a minor is found violating traffic rules, driving a vehicle without a license, or causing harm to others, their parents will be summoned and subjected to a fine of Rs 25,000. This penalty aims to emphasize the strict implementation of traffic rules.

Furthermore, educational institutions are actively engaged in a comprehensive awareness campaign to reinforce responsible behaviour among students. The implementation of these measures stems from a growing concern regarding the behaviour and actions of minors, which have sometimes resulted in grave consequences.

Vijay Kumar Magar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) said, “We have seen parents that allow their children to drive vehicles without having proper licenses. After repeated requests, this is still happening. Hence we have decided to impose penalties on parents and minors who violate rules will face the suspension of their license until the age of 25.”

Recognizing the vital role of educational institutions in shaping the values and behaviour of young individuals, the officials have also decided to involve schools and colleges in a comprehensive awareness campaign. Through workshops, seminars, and interactive sessions, students will be educated about responsible conduct, the consequences of their actions, and the importance of upholding societal norms. This collaborative effort aims to create a culture of accountability and instil a sense of civic responsibility among the youth.
