In a concerted effort to combat pollution in the Indrayani River, the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has initiated the operation of a state-of-the-art Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) with a capacity of treating 3 million liters per day. Situated at Kudalwadi, this facility aims to effectively treat wastewater, thereby preventing the discharge of chemical and contaminated water into the river.

Shekhar Singh, the Commissioner of PCMC, emphasized the municipality’s commitment to preserving the Indrayani River. He stated, “The PCMC prioritizes the preservation of the Indrayani River and is actively promoting the reuse of treated water through sustainable measures like effluent treatment plants. Our efforts are directed towards the well-being of both society and the environment.”

Sanjay Kulkarni, Joint City Engineer (Environment) at PCMC, highlighted the significance of implementing the effluent treatment plant as a crucial step in addressing river pollution. He underscored the municipality’s proactive approach to environmental conservation, citing innovative solutions to combat pollution, as recommended by Commissioner Shekhar Singh and guided by Additional Commissioner Vijaykumar Khorate.

According to reports from the PCMC, the National River Conservation Directorate has expressed concern over the pollution levels in the Indrayani River. The discharge of chemical water, oil, and grease from industrial factories, warehouses, and unauthorized businesses in areas like Chikhli, Kudalwadi, and Jadhavwadi has been identified as a major cause of pollution. Consequently, encroachments along the drain at Kudalwadi Jadhavwadi were cleared to make way for the establishment of the effluent treatment plant.

In compliance with directives from the National Green Tribunal and the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board, the PCMC has initiated measures to address these environmental concerns.

To further mitigate pollution and promote sustainability, the PCMC is facilitating the distribution of treated water to businesses, residents, and construction professionals free of charge through the effluent treatment plant. The municipality has ensured efficient filling of tankers with treated water within five minutes, encouraging reduced reliance on the river for non-drinking purposes.

The efforts undertaken by the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation reflect a proactive approach towards environmental stewardship and underline the commitment to safeguarding the Indrayani River for future generations.
