Pune: In a shocking revelation, over the past 18 months, 530 people have died in road accidents.

As per information, the number of vehicles purchased in the city increased to an all-time high after the Covid lockdown.

According to the Regional Transport Authority (RTA), 36 lakh vehicles were registered with the authority in the last 18 months. Of these, 26.87 lakh are 2-wheelers. In addition, 4.25 lakh new 2-wheeler vehicles were purchased in the past year. This year the number of fatalities is expected to go up due to the increase in vehicles following the Covid lockdown. Two-wheeler accidents are a major cause of accidents on city roads. The number of road accidents involving 2-wheelers has also increased drastically and the number of subsequent deaths has also increased as per the traffic police.

In 2022, there were 872 accidents on city roads, 315 of which were fatal, resulting in 325 fatalities. In the first half of 2023, there were 638 accidents on city roads with 192 of them fatal, resulting in 202 fatalities.

The traffic police and the civic authorities are trying their best to tackle this issue and reduce the number of accidents and deaths.
