According to officials, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) held a second phase of auction on Thursday wherein it sold a property in the Kharadi area for ₹ 18 lakh.

PMC approved the auction because the bidder offered ₹ 1 lakh more than the selling price. It will retrieve the debt from the asset and give the owner back the balance.

This year, the civic body started the first phase of the 32-property auction process in an effort to step up enforcement against property tax defaulters.

On Thursday, the second phase of the auction included at least 53 properties.

After conducting a property tax survey, PMC identified 1,400 defaulters, of whom it has selected 200 properties to be auctioned off.

PMC property tax department officials stated that as a strict measure, PMC has decided to auction properties since property owners have not paid their arrears despite numerous warnings.
