A 25-year-old doctor, declared brain dead following a road accident in Solapur’s Umarga, has given new hope to three individuals through organ donation. The tragic accident occurred on September 13 when the doctor was struck by a Karnataka state transport bus while riding his motorcycle. Umarga, located near the Maharashtra-Karnataka border, was the site of the collision.

According to hospital officials, the doctor was riding with his brother as a pillion passenger at the time of the accident. He was pronounced brain dead on September 17. By the following day, his organs, suitable for transplant, were transported to Pune.

The organs were sent to Pune by Wednesday noon, including a liver, both kidneys, and one cornea.

Aarti Gokhale, coordinator of Pune Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre (ZTCC), provided further details: “One kidney and the pancreas were transplanted into a 39-year-old man in Baramati, while another kidney was donated to a patient from Ravet. The liver was transplanted into a 38-year-old man from Chakan.”

The doctor’s cornea was sent to the Solapur eye bank, ensuring further restoration of vision for a potential recipient. This case marks the 50th deceased organ donation for the Pune ZTCC in 2024, reflecting the growing significance of organ donation in saving lives across the region.
