In a departure from its traditional hold by the Congress party, the BJP has emerged as a dominant force in Pune’s political landscape, clinching significant victories in recent elections.

Former Mayor Murlidhar Mohol has been named as the BJP’s candidate for the Lok Sabha seat in Pune.

Lately, he has been instrumental in building community bonds through various cultural and sports activities. Among his endeavors are organizing events like the ‘Maharashtra Kesari’ and coordinating extensive blood donation campaigns.

Mohol’s strong ties with Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Maharashtra BJP chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule likely influenced his selection as the nominee.
The contenders for the Pune Lok Sabha seat included Sunil Deodhar, Murlidhar Mohol, Jagdish Mulik, and Sanjay Kakade. During the 2019 elections, Girish Bapat, known as the “King of Kasba Peth,” secured victory in the Pune Lok Sabha constituency by defeating Congress candidate Mohan Joshi.

Following the unfortunate passing of MP Girish Bapat in March 2023, the constituency was left without representation as the Election Commission decided against conducting by-polls. Despite its historical ties with the Congress, the BJP has asserted its dominance in the past two elections, securing notable margins of victory.

Pune Lok Sabha constituency currently comprises six Vidhan Sabha segments, each represented by various political parties. In the 2019 elections, Girish Bhalchandra Bapat secured victory with a significant vote share from the BJP, signaling the party’s growing popularity in Pune.

In previous elections, the BJP has consistently increased its vote share, while the INC has faced challenges in maintaining its share. The electorate’s preference for the BJP indicates a shift in political dynamics in Pune.
