Pune: PMC Launches Real-Time Air Quality Dashboard To Monitor Pollution At Construction Sites
Pune | February 25, 2026: In a major step towards controlling air pollution in the city, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) on Wednesday launched a real-time air quality monitoring dashboard to track pollution levels at construction sites across Pune. The digital platform integrates sensor-based data to monitor PM10 and PM2.5 dust particles, enabling authorities to take immediate action against pollution hotspots.
The dashboard was unveiled during a special workshop on “Air Pollution Control and Mitigation Measures in the Construction Sector”, jointly organised by PMC’s City Engineer Department, Environment Department, WRI India, and the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pashan.
Sensor-Based Monitoring System Rolled Out
As per state government guidelines and directions issued by the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, PMC has made it mandatory for construction sites to install sensor-based air quality monitoring systems. These sensors will provide continuous real-time data to the PMC dashboard, allowing officials to identify high-pollution construction zones and initiate inspections and enforcement action without delay.
PMC officials said the system will help in early detection of dust pollution, better planning of site inspections, and faster implementation of dust-control measures such as water sprinkling, covering of materials, and regulated movement of construction vehicles.
Coordinated Action for Pollution Control
Additional Municipal Commissioner (E) explained that the integrated dashboard will centralise all sensor data for administrative monitoring and decision-making. He said sustained and coordinated efforts are essential to protect Pune’s air quality, especially as urbanisation and construction activity continue to rise rapidly.
Representatives from CREDAI Pune and local builders’ associations assured full cooperation with PMC’s pollution control initiatives. They emphasised the need for consistent implementation of dust-control measures across both large and small construction projects.
PMC First to Implement Citywide System
Addressing the workshop, the Mayor of Pune said that PMC has taken a visionary and innovative step by becoming the first municipal corporation to introduce a citywide construction air-quality monitoring system linked to a digital dashboard. She formally inaugurated the air quality monitoring system and appealed to developers to actively support dust-control measures to protect public health.
Municipal Commissioner Nawal Kishore Ram noted that rapid urban growth has significantly increased construction-related pollution in Pune. Citing studies, he said the construction sector is one of the major contributors to dust emissions in the city, making strict monitoring and enforcement essential.
Focus on Public Health and Urban Sustainability
PMC stated that the initiative is aimed at reducing dust pollution, improving air quality, and safeguarding citizens’ health. The dashboard will play a key role in long-term urban planning, environmental monitoring, and sustainable development across Pune.
Officials confirmed that strict action will be taken against construction sites that fail to comply with dust-control norms, and the new digital monitoring system will ensure transparency, accountability, and faster response to pollution complaints.
