Pune- Under the Road Safety Improvement Plan, the road department of PMC has conducted an inspection and identified 33 chronic traffic congestion areas with the help of inputs from citizens and the traffic department. In order to reduce traffic congestion in Pune, the Pune Municipal Corporation has introduced plans to prioritize road widening which will ultimately benefit the commuters and reduce traffic congestion.

The 33 traffic congestion spots have been shortlisted after conducting a thorough inspection and extensive study named the Road Safety Improvement Plan based on citizens’ and the traffic department’s inputs. According to Pune Municipal Corporation Commissioner Dr Rajendra Bhosale, some spots will go through a few changes meanwhile others will need redevelopment to make them wider. This will include the removal of poles, adding extra signals and U-turns. The civic body and the police department will meet soon to pick the junctions. As per the study conducted by PMC and the police department, most junctions can be decongested with minimum effort by implementing minor modifications such as fixing the traffic signal and shifting encroachments away from the road. On the other hand, some stretches will need a reduction in footpath size to avoid congestion.

While all the roads need to go through changes, the initial work will begin with the roads in Koregaon Park. PMC will fix the missing road link from Gangadham to Lulla nagar and Baner Sus Road. Wagholi, Pune-Solapur Road, Ahmednagar Road, and Navale Bridge are also included in the list. This initiative will include fixing proper signage, shifting bus stops to make proper footpaths, increasing the height of concrete dividers to control speeding, setting up a proper turning radius, removing encroachments, and fixing proper marking on roads along with zebra crossings to ease the congestion.
