Pune: Prasad Gajanan Gosavi, a senior reporter for the Pune-based news portal ‘PoliceNama’, passed away on Sunday, September 1st. Following a severe accident nearly two and a half months ago, he was receiving treatment at a private hospital in Nigdi. Despite hopes for his recovery, Prasad breathed his last. After his death, his organs were donated, making Prasad the first journalist to do so. Just hours after his passing, his heart was successfully transplanted into a soldier. While Prasad lost his battle with death, his heart continues to beat today. Along with his heart, two lungs, a liver, a kidney, and two eyes were donated, providing new life to five patients.

Prasad Gosavi met with a serious accident near Khadki railway station a little over a month ago while returning home from the office on his motorcycle. He was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Nigdi, suffering severe brain and leg injuries. Saving his life became a challenge for the doctors. During treatment, when sensations in his leg were lost, it was decided to amputate his right leg below the knee to save his life. As he was recovering, a sudden brain hemorrhage caused him to lose consciousness. Despite the doctors’ best efforts, Prasad’s condition did not improve. Finally, he was declared brain dead, which was a devastating blow to his family. However, they chose not to despair and decided to donate his organs. Prasad’s eyes, heart, two lungs, liver, and one kidney were harvested for donation.

A green corridor was created from Pimpri to Pune to transport Prasad’s heart. Under the protection of police and military personnel, the heart was sent towards Pune. At this time, all the doctors and staff at DY Patil Hospital gave Prasad a salute. Within hours of his death, his heart was successfully transplanted into a soldier at the Southern Command Hospital in Pune. After the organ donation, his body was handed over to his relatives, and his funeral was conducted in a mournful atmosphere at the Nigdi crematorium.

Though Prasad is no longer in this world, his heart continues to beat. In the future, someone will be able to see this world through his eyes. The liver, lungs, and kidney he donated will give new life to other patients. As the first journalist to donate organs after death, Prasad Gosavi will always be remembered.
