The campaign is aimed to create awareness about the plight of the Pune rivers and to help people understand the severity of the issue, primary focus being schoolchildren

A number of organisations have come together under the banner of ‘Aao Nadi  Ko Jane’  and ‘India River Week’ to celebrate the India River Week from November 21 to November 27, 2022.

The campaign is aimed to create awareness about the plight of the Pune rivers and to help people understand the severity of the issue.  A series of events involving PMC school students and residents have been planned.

“We are aware of the pathetic state of our rivers in Pune and across India. Though Pune has rich natural resources, fast urbanization has been the major cause for the degradation of our rivers. Excessive pollution, improper sewage treatment, encroachment and limited water in the rivers due to water storage in dams are the other factors,” said Shaileja Deshpande of Jeevit Nadi NGO.

She added that rivers have been forgotten and with them, there would not be adequate drinking water and biodiversity would be affected.

“This year, the theme of India River Week is Pune River Revival, with the focus of the programmes being school children. We want to make children understand the importance of rivers and make them think about what they can do for the rivers,” she added.

On India River Day ( DATE) , the organizers have planned a series of cultural events like dance performances, street plays on the plight of Pune’s rivers called “Punyala Jevha Jaag Yete” and “Nadi Sampavar Jate”.

“We have thoughtfully planned various activities to raise awareness to connect the residents with the rivers of Pune, to raise awareness about the condition of rivers and also celebrate everything this important ecosystem has given us,” said Deshpande.
