Pune: Sanskriti Society Revives Maratha Legacy Through Fort Making Tradition In Wakad
Wakad, October 21, 2025: The residents of Sanskriti Society, Wakad, celebrated Diwali in a truly traditional way by organising a Fort Making Activity that brought history, creativity, and community spirit together. The event saw enthusiastic participation from residents across all age groups, uniting families in honouring a centuries-old Maharashtrian custom.
Fort-making, a hallmark of Diwali celebrations in Maharashtra and northern Karnataka, dates back nearly *300 years. The practice pays homage to **Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the great Maratha warrior-king who built and defended majestic forts such as *Raigad, Pratapgad, and Sinhagad. These forts, symbols of resilience and courage, are recreated each year in miniature form as part of the festive celebrations.
At Sanskriti Society, families came together to mould forts from mud, clay, stones, and natural materials, reviving this eco-friendly art form. Children took the lead in building turrets and ramparts, decorating them with miniature warriors, flags, and horses — each detail narrating stories of bravery and heritage. The initiative transformed the society’s courtyard into a living classroom, where lessons in teamwork, history, and creativity blended seamlessly with festive joy.
Residents shared that the activity not only strengthened bonds among neighbours but also instilled a deep sense of pride in the region’s glorious past. The forts, proudly displayed throughout the festive season, stood as vibrant symbols of unity, imagination, and cultural pride — ensuring that the legacy of the Maratha Empire continues to inspire generations.
