The recent assembly elections in Pune witnessed a significant increase in fake voting, with 619 tender votes cast across eight urban constituencies. The highest number of fake votes was recorded in Vadgaon Sheri Constituency, with 162 votes, followed by Kothrud Constituency with 93 fake votes.

According to the district election administration, the number of fake votes has increased since the Lok Sabha elections, with a notable rise in the assembly elections. The administration reported that these fake votes were cast by individuals who had already voted in someone else’s name before the actual voter arrived at the polling station.

The fake voting process, also known as tender voting, allows voters to exercise their right to vote even if someone else has voted in their name. To do so, voters must file a complaint with the election officer and have their ballot paper stamped.

In addition to the fake votes, 300 postal ballot papers were discarded, with the highest number of rejections coming from Vadgaon Sheri Constituency with 65 rejections.

The eight urban constituencies in Pune city include Vadgaonsheri, Shivajinagar, Kothrud, Khadakwasla, Parvati, Hadapsar, Pune Cantonment, and Kasba Peth. The counting of votes for these constituencies took place on Saturday.

The rise in fake voting has raised concerns about the integrity of the electoral process. The district election administration has noted that the types of fake voting have increased since the Lok Sabha elections, highlighting the need for stricter measures to prevent electoral fraud.
