Will The MNS Party’s Engine Come to A Halt Permanently?
Due to insufficient votes, there is a possibility that the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena’s (MNS) recognition could be revoked by the Election Commission.
Mumbai, Nov 24: After the recent state assembly elections, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), which had expressed confidence that no government in Maharashtra could be formed without their help, has suffered a major setback. Not a single MNS candidate managed to win in these elections, raising serious questions about the party’s recognition.
In the last two elections, MNS had managed to secure at least one seat each time. However, this time, the party was left without any representation, which puts its recognition in jeopardy. The Election Commission has specific criteria for political party recognition, including securing a certain percentage of votes and a minimum number of seats. MNS failed to meet any of these criteria in the current election.
According to the rules, a party needs either 6% of the total votes and at least one seat, or 3% of the total votes and two seats, to maintain recognition. The MNS did not fulfill any of these requirements in this election. As a result, the party’s recognition could be revoked, and the Election Commission might send them a notice questioning why their recognition should not be canceled.
With a voter base of approximately 9.7 crore in the state, MNS needed to secure around 48 lakh votes (8%) to retain its status. However, they fell short of this target. If the recognition is revoked, the party could lose its railway engine symbol, which could be replaced with an alternative symbol.
When contacted, MNS officials acknowledged the situation but stated that they had not received any official communication regarding this matter and that no internal discussions had taken place.
