Pune: After the late arrival of the monsoon in July, the rainfall in the state has decreased considerably in August . In July, heavy to very heavy rainfall was experienced in Konkan and Vidarbha, leading to the flooding of many villages. In response, an NDRF team was deployed. However, the intensity of the rain has started to decrease since the beginning of August, and it is expected to remain weak for a few more days.

On Tuesday, no district in the state was given an alert. According to the Meteorological Department, after three days, there will be rainfall in the foothills of the Himalayas. Moderate rainfall is expected in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, and West Bengal. Konkan is also anticipated to receive rainfall after three days.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted another round of rain in the state after August 15. The IMD has noted that this year’s rainfall has been impacted by El Nino. While Skymet had predicted below normal rainfall, the IMD has forecast average rainfall. The Forecasting department stated that there won’t be any heavy rainfall anywhere in the state until August 10.

India has had four consecutive years of good monsoon from 2019 to 2022. El Nino refers to warmer-than-average sea surface temperatures in the equatorial eastern Pacific off the coasts of Ecuador and Peru. The abnormal warming leads to increased evaporation and concentrated cloud-formation activity around South America, causing heavy rain there. Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and Australia at the other end of the tropical Pacific are devoid of convective currents, leading to poor rainfall and droughts, which may also affect India.
