In a groundbreaking move, 13 transgenders from Pune were chosen to serve on the ” Lok Adalat panel”  marking a historic moment as they step into the realm of dispute resolution. The adalat was scheduled on March 3, which witnessed these trans activists utilizing their skills to deliver justice and mediate disputes.”

The District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Pune, recognizing the capabilities of the transgender community, provided essential training to the selected members. These individuals, actively engaged in social welfare activities and advocating for transgender rights, aim to integrate their community into the mainstream and foster social acceptance.

Appointed by Mahendra Mahajan, Principal District and Sessions Judge and Chairman of DLSA, these 13 members fall under the provisions for paralegal volunteers outlined in the Legal Services Authorities Act. The initiative aligns with the National Legal Service Authority’s pursuit of equal rights and access to justice for all citizens.

Sonal Patil, DLSA Secretary, highlighted the educational qualifications and significant social work contributions as the basis for the selection of these trans individuals. She emphasized that the inclusion of transgender panel members aims to alter perceptions about their capacity to resolve issues and contribute to societal change.

“The third gender community now holds an esteemed position in all societal levels,” said Patil. “Our decision to increase their participation in the judicial process follows a rigorous selection process and comprehensive training. Initially, they will focus on resolving disputes under the Motor Vehicles Act, with the added participation of law college students from the city in the Lok Adalat.” This move signifies a positive stride towards inclusivity and equal representation in the pursuit of justice.
