State orders re-verification of permits amid complaints of fake documents and irregularities

The Maharashtra government has initiated a major crackdown on auto-rickshaw permits, with strict action likely against drivers who do not know Marathi. The move comes after rising complaints about irregularities in licence issuance, particularly in the Mira-Bhayandar region.

Re-Verification Drive Ordered Across Region
Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik has directed authorities to conduct a thorough re-examination of rickshaw licences. Officials have been asked to submit a detailed report by May 1. The verification will check documents as well as compliance with existing rules, including language requirements.

Marathi Language Made Mandatory
As per transport department norms, knowledge of Marathi is compulsory for rickshaw drivers in the state. During the re-verification process, officials will specifically assess whether drivers can communicate in Marathi with passengers. Drivers found failing this requirement may face cancellation of their licences.

Bogus Documents Trigger Action
The decision follows allegations that several licences were obtained using fake documents. Complaints suggested that some individuals managed to secure residence certificates and permits through improper means. This has raised serious concerns within the administration, prompting a deeper investigation into past approvals.

Action Likely Against Officials Too
The government has indicated that accountability will not be limited to drivers alone. Officials involved in issuing licences based on incorrect or fake documents may also face action. Authorities have taken a strict stance, signalling zero tolerance for such lapses.

Special Campaign In Mira-Bhayandar
A dedicated drive will be conducted to review licences issued over the past decade in the Mira-Bhayandar area. A month-long verification camp will be organised, with additional manpower deployed to scrutinise records and documents thoroughly.

Security Concerns Behind The Move
Officials have highlighted that issuing licences based on fraudulent documents can pose a risk to city security. The ongoing drive is expected to bring tighter checks and possible changes in the licensing system going forward.

The development could impact several rickshaw drivers across Maharashtra, especially in urban areas where enforcement is expected to be stricter in the coming weeks.
