Following India’s triumphant Champions Trophy campaign, Rohit Sharma is expected to retain his role as Test captain for the upcoming five-match series against England, starting June 20 at Headingley. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and its selection panel have extended their backing to Rohit, ensuring his leadership on another crucial overseas tour.

Speculation around Rohit’s Test future had emerged after a lean home Test season and a disappointing tour of Australia, where he opted to “stand down” for the final Test in Sydney. However, India’s recent victory in Dubai appears to have reinforced confidence in his captaincy.

A source close to the selection process confirmed, “He has proven his leadership abilities. Every stakeholder agrees that he is the right candidate to lead the team in England. Rohit himself has shown eagerness to continue playing red-ball cricket.”

Rohit addressed his future after India’s ICC Champions Trophy final win against New Zealand, dismissing immediate retirement talks but keeping his long-term plans open. When asked about India’s hosting of the 2027 ODI World Cup, he said, “Right now, I’m playing really well and enjoying my time with the team. I can’t say about 2027 yet, but I’m keeping my options open.”

Despite his struggles in Australia—where his highest score in three Tests was just 10—Rohit remains optimistic. His last Test half-century came in October 2024 against New Zealand. Speaking in January after stepping down from the Sydney Test, he remarked, “There’s no guarantee that runs won’t come back in a few months. I have confidence in myself, and I know things can change quickly.”

With India set for another challenging overseas tour, all eyes will be on Rohit as he leads the team in England, hoping to turn around his recent Test form and guide India to success.
